Episcopal Relief And Development
ERD works with Church partners and other local organizations to save lives and transform communities in almost 40 countries. We help rebuild after disasters and empower people to create lasting solutions that fight hunger, poverty, and disease. Every dollar that you give to ERD goes directly to relief efforts. The ERD is the third largest relief organization in the United States.
Jamaica Education Mission
Ascension is currently and Educational Mission Partner with Albion Mountain Primary School in Jamaica. The school is owned by St Mary’s Parish in Port Maria and the government provides teachers. The school serves 120 students in grades 1-6 in this very poor rural community. Our parishioners serve needy students with a $300 scholarship covering uniform, books and daily lunch. The parish and the school principal oversee this effort. In the most recent school year we underwrote 45 scholarships.
Our goal is to provide the tools to give students a basic education rounded in Christian faith and values.
Nambale Magnet School
Breaking the cycle of poverty through education has been the lifelong dream of Rev. Evalyn Wakhusama. In 2009 she opened the Nambale Magnet School in her native country Kenya. Part of her unique vision includes educating orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC’s) side by side with paying students. This novel approach removes the stigma of being an OVC, as historically they were segregated into separate schools with low academic performance. The results have been remarkable, with NMS typically scoring among the top 2-3 schools annually in the entire western region of Kenya. In addition to academic excellence, students are strongly encouraged to develop as people of faith and character.
