Father Jim’s Biography

Rev. Dr. James A. Sorvillo Sr., affectionately known as Fr. Jim, is a second-generation Episcopal priest with Floridian roots, whose life and ministry are testaments to a profound faith journey. Married to his wife Debbie since 1988, they have two sons and a grandson, which mark the cornerstone of his personal life.

Fr. Jim’s professional path began with a degree in clinical psychology from the University of Central Florida in 1987, leading to significant work in clinics around Orlando. However, his vocation took a transformative turn when he embraced lay youth ministry and, guided by the Holy Spirit, he and Debbie ventured into ordained ministry. Their shared spiritual path led to Sewanee, Tennessee, where he completed his Master of Divinity.

Upon graduation, Fr. Jim served in Melbourne, FL, before his long-standing service at Ascension, Orlando, culminating in his current role as rector of Church of Ascension, Clearwater, beginning in 2021. His doctoral work focused on congregational development and renewal, influencing his approach to church leadership and community building.

Beyond his church roles, including interim director of the Episcopal Counseling Center and president of the Standing Committee, Fr. Jim has been an integral part of the Diocese of Southwest Florida, where he also stood as a nominee for Bishop.

He continues his committed service to the Church of Ascension, cherishing the opportunity to foster spiritual growth and community engagement.
